Harpies are fearsome avian predators native to the islands of the Barkstream in Hanaq. These eyeless, tri-horned beasts have evolved distinctive adaptations that make them among the most dangerous hunters in their ecosystem. Despite their bird-like appearance, harpies are flightless creatures with wings that have developed into weaponized appendages.

Completely blind, harpies have developed extraordinarily acute hearing that allows them to detect prey through subtle sounds, including heartbeats and breathing at considerable distances.

Their massive, muscular hind legs enable them to deliver devastating kicks that can incapacitate prey instantly. Rather than supporting flight, harpy wings have evolved into sleek, spear-like appendages capable of impaling victims. Each harpy possesses a scorpion-like stinger tail that delivers a potent neurotoxin, causing pain, weakness, and eventually paralysis in victims.

While unable to truly fly, harpies can hover for approximately one minute, allowing them to position themselves strategically during hunts or traverse short gaps between terrain features.

Behavior

Harpies are pack hunters that coordinate their attacks with surprising sophistication despite their limited intelligence. A typical hunting group consists of 3-7 individuals that use sound to track prey and coordinate ambushes.

Their diet primarily consists of fish and smaller creatures. They have been known to attack sapient beings and even juvenile titans. Their adaptability and aggressive nature make them particularly problematic near settled areas.

One of their most notable behaviors is their island-hopping technique. When resources become scarce, harpies can curl their bodies into a buoyant ball, allowing them to float on the Barkstream currents between islands. This ability, though limited by the fact their feathers eventually become waterlogged after approximately a day, has allowed them to spread rapidly throughout the Barkstream ecosystem.

Professional monster hunters and Armada units frequently conduct culling operations to control harpy populations, but their impressive reproductive rate and ability to establish new territories via water travel has made complete eradication virtually impossible.
